Through the WERS befriending scheme, asylum seekers and refugees are matched with a trained volunteer befriender who they will meet with either weekly or fortnightly. Under COVID-19 restrictions, they can currently meet outdoors in a public place such as a park, museum, gallery or in a garden (previously people could also meet up in their homes – this will be reviewed in the future), as well as keeping in touch via phone, texts or video-calls. Through the befriending scheme people can find friendship, emotional support, someone to show them round the city, introduce them to new places and give them an opportunity to practice their English language.
